A Better Bob Steele Adventure Than Most
Back in the mid-80's when the Beta-Max video player was the latest thing, I bought a copy of this western in Beta. I couldn't believe how sharp and clear the picture quality was compared to a lot of old westerns then coming out on tape. It still looks very good and sound is very good as well today. I have since figured out that this was a re-release print stuck by Republic with music added to enhance the film.
A very good early effort from A.W. Hackel's Supreme Pictures unit, which would supply Bob Steele westerns to Republic through the 1938 season.
Bob Steele is just fine having made many westerns and others for over 10 years. He was at the top of his game and a favorite of mine. Harley Wood, cute little leading lady is great in an understated way. Horace Murphy as the bumbling sheriff always tickles me too.
Watch this one if you like some mystery in your westerns as well. Some parts of this obviously played down due to "Hayes office" concerns. "Picture Girls"? Get serious.
Highly recommended. Enjoy.
